TIST Program during 2004
TIST started its treeplanting program in Vedal during 2002. With the help of the small groups of Vedal, TIST extended to several villages in and around Vedal (Kanchipuram District) areas like, KeeraNallur, Chittoor, Molachur, Nandhimedu,Singadivakkam, Marutham, Jambhodi, Aandiseruvallur, Kottavakkam, Melpadavur, Seruvallur, SeruvallurMettucolony and Peruvalayam. Gradually, TIST developed in the southern part of Kanchipuram District like, Chamundi, El Endathur, Agili, Singapalli, Ulundhai, Mel Kodungalur and Kattukolli.
During 2004, TIST Program has reached Kattiampandal (September), Vellaputtur (November) and Sathanoor (November) areas. More than 20 small groups are registered during 2004. End of December 2004, there are 249 small groups and 1,462 Project Members under TIST.
TIST started its Service Centre – Node in the month of June 2004, wherein, the small group members are exercised with various Good Practice of TIST. The first Node Meeting was held at Chittoor (Molachur Centre). Presently, there are seven Node Meetings in a month for seven different Group Centres like: (1) Chamundi, (2) Mel Kodungalur, (3) Peruvalayam, (4) Kattiampandal, (5) Chitoor, (6) Kandoor, (7) Aandiseruvallur.
In the beginning of 2004, there were only few thousand seedlings/trees under TIST Program. In December 2004, there are more than 3.5 lakhs seedlings and 3.5 lakhs trees. TIST congratulates all the Small Groups for their wonderful contribution. A special gratitude to Sindhukavi, Chamundhi, Srinivasan, Ganga of Chittoor / Saraswathi of Kandoor / Salsa, Perumal of Mel Kodungalur.
Seedlings should be only in Polythene Bags
Unquestionably, every small group should have a nursery with minimum 1000 seedlings round the year, so that, whenever there is a casualty due to natural calamity or sluggish care, the seedlings from the nursery can be planted. Seedlings should not be scattered on the ground. TIST will not make voucher payment for the seedlings that are scattered on the ground. The small groups are request to have their seedlings only in the polythene bags. During 2004 several small groups started a nursery with several thousand seedlings scattered on the ground, but during transplanting, only 30% - 40% of the seedlings were transplanted, because of two reasons:
1. They did not have enough land for transplanting all the seedlings;
2. They did not have enough resources like: water, fertilizer and manpower & time.
Seedlings should be grown only the polythene bags. According to the species, the size of the polythene bags should be chosen. The polythene bags should be properly arranged in rows like 10 / 10, arranged in a square with walking space between each square, so that, the maintenance work can be carried without damaging any seedlings and moreover, quantification can be made perfectly.
Quantification
While TIST appreciates the small groups for their efforts in having track of their seedlings / trees and accounting the same in SGMR, TIST also very strongly emphasizes all the small groups to cooperate with the TIST Quantifier for the perfect and regular quantification. During the year 2004, several times the TIST Quantifier had been wandering off from quantification due to following reasons:
1. Unavailability of Small Group Members during quantification
2. The weeds are not removed from the grove
3. Seedlings: Scattered very closely on the ground
4. Trees: Planted very closely
5. Seedlings/Trees: Monoculture
The quantification is as important as growing trees/seedlings. Only a perfect and regular quantification will get voucher payment for the small groups. It is the small groups responsibility to take care of the above five points. Every small group should call and keep the Quantifier informed about their groves once in one month and the TIST Quantifier will certainly quantify every grove once in two months. Only if this process goes on smoothly, the voucher payment will be released. Your TIST Quantifier Mobile Phone No.09840299822.
Advancing Kandoor
The Small groups of Kandoor are as old as the Small Groups of Chittoor. Only since August 2004 they have realized the importance of TIST Tree Planting Program. Small Groups like, Saraswathi, Ganga, Asseeamman, Asseeamman Arumugam and Saroja are trying their best in restoring the forest at Kandoor Village.
Saraswathi Small Group of Kandoor
They already have more than 8000 eucalyptus trees and 300-320 teak seedlings in polythene bags. Again now, they have started with more than 22000 (approximately) eucalyptus seedlings scattered on the ground. TIST looks forward from this Small Group some different kind of species other Casuarina and Eucalyptus.
Ganga Small Group of Kandoor
This small group has approximately 2500 Casuarina seedlings scattered on the group. They are planning to transplant their seedlings during the February 2005.
Asseeamman Arumugam Small Group
This small group has approximately 1550 eucalyptus and 200 casuarina seedlings.
Saroja Small Group
This small group has approximately 3500 eucalyptus and 19500 casuarina seedlings. The seedlings are very healthy, but very difficult to quantify, because the seedlings are very tightly grown in the soil bed.
The reason for the delay in quantification and voucher payment to Kandoor areas is purely due to the Small Groups sluggish act with regard to maintenance of seedlings / trees and submission of SGMR. Please go through the monthly Newsletter and know the status of other Small Groups of various other Nodes and have a healthy competition with them, and grow well with TIST.
