District, visited TIST Program areas
On 31st October 2008, Mr.S.K.Shanmugamsundaram, IFS,
Deputy Conservator of Forests,Tiruvannamalai Districts made a visit to TIST tree groves in Thurinjapuram Center to see how well the trees are planted. He interacted with the TIST members and gave them several tips on tree planting activity. The members asked the DCF whether intercropping can be done in-between the newly
planted teak trees, for which the DCF said that yes intercropping can be done for 4-5 times continuously from the
initial stage of the trees. He also suggested that black gram (ulundhu) can be practiced as good intercrop in-
between the teak trees. Practicing intercropping is a best practice, which would give additional revenue.
Gowri Small Group of Thiruthani Center Snip
Group are following the best practices of TIST at Gollalakuppam Village in Thiruthani Center. In an settle area of 1.5 hectare the members are also maintaining 600 teak seedlings in a nursery, which would seedlings grow straight vertically.

Do not mistreat the environment
Air, water and soil are our nature, our environment. Future needs a good environment. Our developments and comfortable life should not abuse the environment. We are presently living in a violent world because our ancestors mistreated air, water and soil. Our main goal in TIST activity is sustainable development, which includes pollution free air, water and soil. After transplanting the seedlings, few group members throw away the polythene bags of the seedlings in the land where the seedlings are transplanted, which is a wrong act. Collect all the polythene bags and sell it for reuse, this will get you some money and more importantly you are avoiding
sail pollution. Furthermore, stop using chemical fertilizers, which pollutes soil and air. We need to secure the natural resources, which is very much essential formanto live.
Free Seedlings from Forestry Extension Center
Forestry Extension Center, Poondi distributed free seedlings to several TIST Small Groups at Placepalayam and Thiruthani Center. Mr.l.Kannan, Ranger, Forestry Extension Center, Poondi visited few of the TIST tree groves and attended few TIST node meetings too. He explained about the importance of trees and gave a demonstration on how to plant teak trees. He also explained to the members how to tree the leaves and unwanted branches in teak trees. TIST conveys a big thanks to the Forestry Extension Center for the free seedlings and a special thanks to Mr.l.Kannan for his knowledge transfer on trees to TIST members.

Echos Green Small Group of Placepalayam
The members of Echos Green Small Group are following the best practices of TIST at Pappireddikandigai village of
Placepalayam Center. They have dedicated more than 7 hectares of land for tree planting under TIST. As of now, they have 612 mango, 773 teak trees in their groves. These trees are planted with good spacing, so that, intercropping can be done for several years. The members are maintaining a huge nursery, full of teak seedlings totaling to 17,000/-. These seedlings are being transplanted from November and the members have planned to plant all the 17,000 seedlings by December end. Beginning of next year, the members of this group would be having trees planted in more than 15 hectares. The members are practicing intercropping too, their favorite short
time crop is ground, which they practice it twice in a year in between their mango trees. During October 2008, this group received Rs.1,025 as voucher payment from TIST.

Node meeting at Katchur Village
On 8th November 2008, Node meeting for Katchur area was organized near the Panchayat Office at Katchur Village. A.Joseph Rexon, TIST Program Direcor, |.Kannan, Ranger, Forest Extention, Poondy, Thamil Selvi, TIST Training Coordinator, TIST Asst. Area Coordinator, TIST Quantifiers and several TIST members from Katchur and Venkatapuram area participated in the Node meeting.
TIST Asst. Area Coordinator started the Node meeting with a prayer and greeted all the participants to the Node. The TIST Program Director explained about the activities of TIST Program in Poondy and Thiruvallur Block.

He also explained about the objectives and goals of TIST in Thiruvallur District. The important points of the GHG agreement were also explained and the relation between TIST and TIST Participants was made clear. The participants observed interestingly the talk on the global warming delivered by the Program Director.
The Forest Ranger, Kannan in his talk said that, if teak seedlings are planted, it would give more income in the future. He also advised the TIST Participants to get the free seedlings from the Forestry Extension Department as soon as possible and plant it quickly before the rainy season ends.
TIST Training Coordinator said that the 3000 free seedlings received the Forest Extension Center would be distributed to the members of Katchur and Venkatapuram area in the presence of the Program Director in the end of Node meeting.
She explained to the members about nursery maintenance and the pit size for planting teak seedlings. She said that the pit size should be 2' x 2' x 2° and the spacing between each pit should be 2 m. She also explained the system to store rain water in slope area in Katchur village. How to carryout the best intercropping system during summer was also explained by her.
In the end of the Node meeting, the Program Director distributed the free seedlings received from the Forest Extension Center to the Katchur small group members. After receiving the free seedlings the group members thanked TIST and Forest Extension, they also assured that in future, they would be planting lot more trees in their land. Finally, the Program Director said that every members of TIST are associates in TIST. He also said that, TIST Program has been designed for you all and you all should take complete responsibility to run the program, TIST will be with you always to give you suitable training and guidance to run the program.
Vasantham Small Group of Thurinjapuram Center
The members of Vasantham Small Group are following the best practices of TIST in Mekkalur Village at Thurinjapuram Center. The Pachaiyappan grove of this group is about 2.11 acre in size, in which, 302 teak trees planted with good spacing. In another grove called Ramamaoorthy, the members have planted 150 teak trees in an area of 0.93 acre. In total, the members have 452 teak trees with them. The Ramamoorthy grove is full of rocks and is in poor condition for agriculture, and so the members decided to plant trees by joining in TIST Program.
The last quantification on this group was made on 26th May 2008. The members cooperate well with the quantifier during quantification and they also participate in all the activities of TIST. They have also planned to plant another 1000 teak trees very soon. The members believe that all the teak trees which they have planted under TIST Program will get them good yield after 25 years. The members say that they are very proud and happy to carrying out the tree planting activity in TIST Program, whichis developed for villagers.
