This website will enable thousands of farmers to get information about their own groups and clusters quickly and easily. It will help us be mutually accountable, transparent, and accurate if we use it well. Now you can get information such as number of trees counted for your group, in each individual grove, the members of your group, whether your group is qualifying for payments and if it has been paid recently. In regard to your Cluster, you will be able to view the total number of groups in your cluster (and you can compare with other clusters), your next cluster meeting date, the current leaders of your cluster and when last elections were held. Further, you will be able to know how your Cluster has been spending its monthly budget. Steps to login to this mobile website There are 2 ways you can access this mobile website. If you are a TIST member and you have been assigned a TIST email address, you can login directly using your password. Signing in in this way gives you access to more information. If you do not have TIST email address, you can sign in as a guest. You can access this site from your phone if it has internet capabilities or from cybercafes. TIST Quantifiers have been asked to be available in all Clusters meetings to train and support in other activities.They have been asked to provide palms to the Clusters during the Cluster meetings and members can view information about their Small Groups or Clusters or about TIST program right at the Cluster meetings. Here are steps. 1. Go to www.tist.org/mobile 2. If you have TIST email address, log in with your TIST email address and use your password. 3. If you don’t have TIST email address, you can log in as a guest. Put in your name and organization and then tap log in. Organization can be name of your Small Group.

4. You will be directed to the next page. At the top, you will find “Cluster”, “Groups”,“groves” and “Log out” 5. If you want to view your Cluster, tap on “ Cluster”. You will be directed to a page that shows TIST project areas worldwide. Choose and tap an area of your interest (for example, Meru). From here, you will move to the next page where you will find a list of Clusters under Meru (or any other area you chose) with number of groups and trees listed plus the next meeting dates and last election. 6. Tap your Cluster (for example, Ciakanyinga). A new page will open and you will find Small Groups listed by their names, TIST number, Number of trees and last date of quantification. 7. Tap on your Group. (for example, TARADA).This will take you to a new page. You will find details about this group, including payment eligibility and whether the group has met requirements to take part in the carbon market. ENGLISH VERSION 4 W hen TIST Kenya went through her third Validation and Verification last July, some tree count inaccuracies were found.This made us to stop the payments that were ongoing because it was apparent that we were not paying groups for their actual number of trees. Since August, Quantifiers and Auditors have worked hard to make sure the tree data is accurate. They have audited many Clusters, and the TIST Leadership Council feels confident that most groups now qualify for payments.Therefore, we will resume paying Small Groups again from this month. As a reminder, Small Groups need to do the following in order to make payments smooth and effective: Things that your Small Group should do; 1) Be on time! When you are late to the meeting, it causes delays for everyone. 2) Make sure your Small Group is represented in all Cluster meetings. During the issuing of vouchers, at least 2 members of your group must be present. You will be paid the month after you receive your voucher if you follow the steps below. 3) When your Small Group is issued your voucher, please be sure to: a. Inform all members of your group that you received the voucher and its amount. b. All members of your group should sign the Agreement to accept Mpesa payments. 4) You should select two of your group members, one to hold the SIM card and one as PIN Custodian for your group. a. At least three members of your group should sign the voucher. It is advisable that members with highest number of trees should be given first priority to sign the voucher. b. Make sure that your Safaricom SIM card has been registered with Mpesa and that the card is active. Your SIM Card custodian should be the one to be registered on behalf of the Small Group but the Mpesa PIN should be secretly kept by your PIN Custodian – another member apart from SIM card custodian. c. If your group was previously issued with SIM card by TIST and it was registered, you need not to have another card but always make sure that it remains active. 5) During payments, your Small Group should be represented by a minimum of 2/3 of your members. Your Small Group members who signed the voucher should be present during the payment meeting. 6) If there are Mpesa delays or any other problem that causes your group to be delayed in payments, give phone contacts of at least 2 more members other than the SIM card and PIN custodians to your cluster Accountability Person. 7) Upon receiving your payments, please inform other members of your Small Groups and also your Cluster Accountability person. Make sure that your cluster representatives return the signed vouchers to the TIST office. This is important for accurate payments to take place. If there is a delay in receiving vouchers, it may cause a delay in payment for your cluster. Small Groups Payments to begin again from this month. ENGLISH VERSION 5 Deforestation is the removal of trees and other woody vegetation cover. Forests and woodlands cover about a third of the world’s land surface.

They regulate climate, protect water resources, provide forest products (e.g. timber, medicine, fruit, and more) worth billions of dollars and support a tremendous variety of plant and animal species. Yet they are being destroyed at a rate of 20 million hectares per year. Half of the world’s population depends on these forests for fuel, yet roughly 100 million people do not have enough fuel for minimal energy requirements. Major causes of deforestation: § Deforestation occurs when vegetation is cleared for activities like farming or grazing and uses such as: firewood, brick making, fish smoking, tobacco curing, tea drying, construction, and timber. § Forest degradation is when a forest becomes less diverse and resilient due to poor use and management (for example, when old trees are all cut, leaving mainly brush, or when a useful § species is all harvested so that it disappears from the forest, or when forest is heavily grazed, so that trees can’t grow to replace those that die). § Much of deforestation and forest land degradation results from a lack of awareness of the full value of trees. § In some cases, the value of trees may be known but poverty and the idea that there are no good alternatives lead people to clear trees. Consequences of Deforestation: § Soil erosion: lack of tree cover and root binding exposes soil to erosion. § Lack of forest resources: removing trees destroys habitats, reduces biodiversity, removes food and medicinal resources, and increases competition for construction materials. People will have to walk further for firewood, and if forest products are being bought, prices will rise. § Deforestation also means we lose the many other benefits of trees: Trees act as a windbreak, retain moisture, add oxygen to the air, and add nutrients to soil. Hence without trees the local climate will become drier with increased risk of flooding, wind erosion, decreasing soil fertility and diminished air quality. What can we do to prevent deforestation and forest degradation? § Establish tree nurseries and distribute or sell seedlings to the community. § Use energy-saving cook stoves that use less firewood and charcoal. § Use alternative sources of energy and fuel when possible (e.g. heating from the sun, sawdust, coffee and risk husks, grass, weeds, crop wastes, animal waste). § Carry out tree planting activities.

Become a successful, effective TIST group! Encourage § your neighbors and friends to join TIST as well. § Do not cultivate land bordering a river or swamp. Leave trees and vegetation to grow to protect these waters. § Be careful to not over-graze land. Limit animals’ access to tree seedlings that they may destroy to give the forest a chance to regrow. § Encourage agro-forestry or the use of woodlots. Having trees on your land provides good access to forest products and helps protect nearby forest. Deforestation and forest land degradation are serious problems. What can we do? ENGLISH VERSION 6 Developing a hearing ear. When the communities work for sustainable development, they work to meet current needs and also to meet the needs of future generations. It means we take action to change behavior so that instead of destroying resources and damaging the environment, we are building and rehabilitating them for years to come. Instead of clearing forests, for example, we are planting and protecting them to make a greener, better future while improving our own lives as well. It is our responsibility to do this today, and not to wait for our children to start with a damaged environment. Sustainable development aims to increase our quality of life while making sure that the environment is able to supply the natural resources and services required in the future. To accomplish this, resources should not be removed faster then they can be renewed. Waste products from resources used should not be produced faster then the environment can safely absorb them (for example, forests absorb the carbon dioxide from burning fossils fuels, but when we use too much too quickly, we overwhelm the this natural filter, pollute the air and cause climate change). Sustainable development is diverse, but there are common, underlying principles: 1. Concern for equity and fairness This means protecting the rights of the poor and marginalized today while also considering the welfare of future generation. Each nation should be able to develop, but each should consider the impacts of their actions on other nations and communities as well. We should consider how our activities impact women, children, and the poor. Impacts of actions and development should be considered globally, not just for ourselves. For example, a farmer using pesticide on her field near a river should consider the impact that this has on the men, women, children and animals downstream who also depend on this water. Future generations are not able to speak for themselves, yet if development is to be sustainable then it must consider their interests and rights. 2. Long-term view- this requires thinking about the consequences of actions beyond the present act. If we don’t know the long-term potential impacts and risks of an activity, we should avoid it when possible. 3. Focused thinking- this means understanding that there is one earth with given resources, and that our own actions operate within this large system. The environment, society and economy are all connected in time and space. The consequences of decisions made one part of world can quickly affect other parts Sustainable development has no single plan to be followed. Rather, it is up to each country and community, and to each of us, to decide how its principles can best be implemented in our region. It is only when the environment and social impacts of our actions are fully considered, with a long-term view and regard for the needs of the many people sharing this earth, that economic development can take place is a sustainable way Let’s sustain our environment by planting trees in own farms for ourselves and future generation. Let’s follow these principles in all of the work that we do. Why sustainable development matters. P agers and cell phones seem to be everywhere these days. People have these devices clipped to their belts, in their purses, briefcases, or cars. Being able to stay in communication with their family or business associates gives us a sense of security Those who carry pagers or cellphones recognize their signal or ring and respond immediately. The same is true spiritually. We need to discern the voice of God and respond immediately. In 1 Samuel, Chapter 2 and 3, we are told the story of the aging priest Eli who could no longer hear God’s voice. He had lost his spiritual receptivity because he did not restrain his sons from doing evil. However, the young boy, Samuel, was dedicated to the Lord from childhood by his godly mother, Hanna. Samuel had been taught how to hear and obey God’s voice. We as TIST servants and farmers we should develop a hearing ear. Let’s practice TIST values to develop best practices in our farms and in our clusters, and we will have success. There are times today when God speaks to his people in supernatural ways, in dreams, visions or through angelic messages,. If God speaks to you in a dream or vision, ask him to reveal to you the meaning and He will reveal to what he is saying to you and confirm it. It is important to recognize that regardless of the method God chooses to speak to you, you must HEAR what he is saying and obey. That is why we must develop a hearing Ear, and the courage to take action as He asks. And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying,“This is the way. Walk ye in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when ye turn left-[Isaiah 30;21]. Please, TIST farmers, let’s listen to the TIST servants as well, for they have the right message for our Environmental Development. We are called to TIST and called to action. We shall change the deteriorated climate, and it will restore it back to the glory of creation. KISWAHILI VERSION 5 Ukataji misitu ni kutolewa kwa miti na mimea mingine yenye mbao. Misitu na vichaka hufunika sehemu moja juu ya tatu ya ardhi. Miti hubadilisha tabianchi, hulinda maji, hutupa vitu vinavyotokana na misitu (kwa mfano, mbao, dawa, matunda na vingine) vinavyo ughali mkubwa na huruhusu mimea na wanyama wengi tofauti kuishi. KISWAHILI VERSION 6 Wakati jamii zinapofanya kazi kufikia maendeleo endelevu, wanafanya kazi kuyakimu mahitaji yaliyopo pamoja na mahitaji ya vizazi vijavyo. Inamaanisha tunachukua hatua kubadilisha tabia ili badala ya kuharibu rasilmali na kuharibu mazingira, tunajenga na kuyarudisha yalivyokuwa kwa miaka mingi ijayo.
