Protect trees during prolonged rain fall
We can predict rain fall but cannot stop continued rain fall. Tree roots decay in continued standing water around the trees. Do the following to protect your trees.
• Do not irrigate until you see the trees need water. Even if the rain has reduced or stopped, the below ground would be well saturated,
• If your land area is large, at different points, dig the soil for a feet or two and if you notice moist do not water the grove.
• Do not apply fertilizer till the soil drains the excess water.
• Try to channel standing water out of your grove and collect the water in a pit or farm pond which you can use during later days to irrigate the grove
• Watch for diseases caused by fungi during rainy season, they affect the leaves and slowly spread to the rest of the tree.
Pachayamman Small Group
We belong to Pachayammal Small Group from Karam Village from Vandhavasi Center of Tiruvannamalai District. During 2011 we received 2,000 teak seedlings from TIST Indi at free of cost, planted on ourland and growing it in good condition till today. We are participating in all TIST meetings, training programs, learning the best practices and getting benefits out of it. Specifically we learnt few best pracices to improve our groves, form mulch pile around the trees and in what season the unwanted side brancehs can be trimmed. Also, we ask our doubts to the quantifiers who come to audit our trees, they either give the explanation then and there or they call us back and explain over phone. Each year we are receiving tree stipend for all our live trees. Our trees are now 10 years old. We request other small groups members to get benefited like us through TIST Program.
