About TIST ‘The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program’ (TIST) was initiated in 1999 in Tanzania to support subsistence farmers by the ‘Clean Air Action Corporation’, a US-based company (CAAC), and the ‘Institute for Environmental Innovation’ (I4EI) through a seminar and pilot project for the farmers to work on sustainable development, health and environmental education. This project aimed to improve the local environmental conditions through a sustainable approach of tree planting, conservation farming, nursery raising, beekeeping, improved stoves, etc. while helping in greenhouse gas reductions. Subsequently, TIST expanded to work in other countries including India, Kenya, and Uganda. The work in India was initiated in 2002, focussing on Tamil Nadu. The norm of TIST is for farmers to form Small Groups (SG) of 6 to 12 farmers, to help improve the local environment and the world’s climate through tree planting and other environmentally sustainable efforts. The SGs are also responsible for organizing the TIST program in their area. The farmers plant multipurpose and indigenous trees around their houses, farms, and other common lands, if possible. These trees are quantified meticulously and at the appropriate time enter the carbon credit market.
CAAC helps farmers participate in the carbon credit business. Farmers receive a 70% share of the profits from the sales of carbon credit. Profits are created through participating in the carbon business, which involves planting trees and keeping them alive for the long term. TIST also incentivizes the farmers for planting trees by paying a small amount every year of the anticipated profit amount for every live tree even before the trees are ready for the carbon credit market. Today, over 170,000 TIST farmers in India, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, are successfully growing over 23 million living trees, protecting and creating biodiversity, developing leadership, improving their health and local environment, adapting farming techniques to meet current environmental challenges, and mitigating climate change. • We CREATE BIG RESULTS WITH LOW BUDGET ENGLISH VERSION 2 Updates from the field We know that all eligible Small Groups (with 500 and more trees in each SG that have been planted with accepted tree species at a minimum of 7 ft and more distance, with the groves been quantified within the last 12 months) receive an annual incentive amount to the joint account of SG members. Though the process of generating vouchers was delayed due to a combination of reasons, including technical glitches, we have rectified the process. Since April 2023, we have adopted another method ensuring that all eligible SGs get their pending incentive dues quickly. In this context, till September 2023, of the eligible SGs, we were able to distribute vouchers to over 400 SGs in about 50 Node meetings. Post issuing of the vouchers and checking of SG bank details, amount to the tune of Rs 50,00,000 was credited in the respective bank accounts of the joint account holders, with 2400 farmers receiving the incentive payments. We still have to make payments for pending SGs, as vouchers could not be raised for these groups and we are conducting some final checks on these vouchers. Moreover, once a voucher is raised for a particular SG, subject to meeting all our criterion, the validity of the voucher is only for three months. All vouchers will be handed over only during Node meetings, but it does not mean that a Node meeting is meant only for distribution of voucher, but an opportunity for all of you to understand and learn from other farmers and TIST. So, to ensure that the vouchers reach your SGs, preferably all members of the SGs must attend these monthly Node meetings and importantly details you share including bank must be clear. We appreciate the patience of groups that are awaiting payment.
But for all members of TIST it is important we take the time to make sure the right farmers get the right monies! Following are some pointers that you, as either an individual member in your SGs or as joint bank account holders must focus on, to ease the process and clear the grey areas of vouchers and payments – 1. Know your Small Group (SG) well – We all win when each member in the SG wins.
• the name of your SG.
• who are the other members – share your names, address, phone numbers.
• what are the tree species in each of your individual groves.
• what is the approximate number of trees in each member’s groves.
• who are the joint bank account holders for your SG, where is the branch located, what is the account number and IFSC code. Ensure your bank account is live.
• Try to be in touch with your SG members regularly for updates and knowledge sharing. 2. Quantification and Cluster Servants (CS) – Build an open relationship with each other for a winwin situation. They are they to serve you.
• Get to know your Cluster Servant well as she/he is the person who will be the bridge between SGs and the rest of the TIST team. Get their number and interact when needed.
• When the CSs calls you up to inform about quantifying your grove, ensure that you are there with them in your field as far as possible. This will clear any doubts about number of trees, spacing, age, replacement, general upkeep of groves, source of new seedlings etc. ENGLISH VERSION 3
• If your grove has not been quantified for more than 12 months, ensure that you request the CS to quantify your grove, else there will be delay in the payments.
• Our CS work in your groves in difficult conditions, so be their friend and support them while they are quantifying your groves, be present, clean your groves for easier quantification. Inform on mortality, replacement of seedlings. Please don’t try to persuade them to include older trees as fresh trees or trees that don’t follow our norms of spacing or species.
TIST would like to spread our work, so do inform our CS of potential farmers (including small, marginal and women) so we reach out to the neediest and help them be part of not just conservation but also an opportunity to earn in the carbon credit market. 3. Node meetings – Be in touch to get the best out of the partnership with TIST
• As we emphasise TIST is neither a government or a non-government entity. It is a company which works with farmers to enter the carbon market and in the process support the farmers for income and the environment for sustainability.
• Node meetings are organised to discuss issues pertaining to our work such as training, administration, payments, newsletter distribution, sharing of best practices. So regular attendance is necessary and not only when payment vouchers are issues.
• Reading aloud the contents of our newsletter ‘Chezhumai’ in each of the meeting is important
. • TIST believes in leadership building and towards this encourages you to select a Leader (L), Co-leader (CL) and Accountability partner (AP) ensuring each gender comes into alternate positions. This order changes every three months, and so the Leader exits, the Co-leader becomes the Leader, the Accountability partner becomes the Co-leader and a new person comes in as Accountability partner. In this way, all members in the Node and from both genders get a chance to be a Leader. These three people will ensure that the Node meeting is conducted regularly, the newsletter is read aloud during these meetings, issues in the Nodes are raised and solutions found.
• Share your knowledge and best practices in the Node meetings, someone attending the meeting can benefit from your learnings.
4. Voucher Payments and Green House Gas (GHG) Agreements– TIST is committed to be Honest and Transparent.
• Currently, TIST India pays the SG farmers an incentive for planting and keeping the trees alive for fifty to sixty years as per the GHG agreement.
• As per the current agreement, the carbon is calculated from the trees in your groves after 20 years and once they reach the carbon market, 70% of the profit share from this transaction will be shared with the SGs as per the GHG agreement.
• The GHG agreement is only for sale of carbon credits. Older trees with large circumference store more carbon and hence the profit share increases. So, it is in the benefit of all to nurture your trees and retain them for longer periods and go only for selective harvest, based on need. It is also important for you to encourage your small group fellow farmers similarly.
• All data related to your groves is available at our website (www.tist.org), and TIST will ensure all payments are done accordingly on time. But sometimes payments get delayed due to error in ENGLISH VERSION 4 calculations or even if your SGs has low tree (< 500) or has not been quantified within the last 12 months. In such scenario, discuss the payment issue with the concerned CSs.
• In case, you are not satisfied with their explanations, do reach out to the Co-Directors, whose contact number is shared in this Newsletter.
• As we mentioned above, the present GHG agreement, every year you get an incentive for live trees and agree to retain the trees for 50 years at least and the carbon stored in your trees is calculated and traded after 20 years. Now, we are getting ready with a new GHG agreement wherein you will retain the trees for 60 years and will be paid a part of the profit share every year, which shortly we will finalise and share with you. Story from the field In the last 2-3 months, we decided to restart the training and knowledge sharing amongst the farmers during the Node meetings. We also organised other resource persons like trainers and experienced progressive farmers to come and talk to all of you to on aspects of tree growing, intercropping, selection of species, taking care of the saplings, methods to address pest and disease, importance of soil health and nutrients etc. We also decided to invite the local forest, agriculture and horticulture department officials to address you to make you aware of support available in your area and also availability of seedlings from their nurseries. In the last two months, our TIST farmers could get over approximately 20,000 seedlings of Mango, Teak, Mahogany, Dalbergia, Thespesia, Pterocarpus, Red sanders etc., through these departments with facilitation of our Cluster Servants.
Our Cluster Servant Mr. K. Palani taking care of Vandavasi area has managed to support about 12 farmers through seedlings from the Forest Department, while another of our Cluster Servant Mrs. Meena responsible for Thurinjapuram area also procured mango seedlings from the Horticulture Department. Our Field and Desk Auditor Mr. Karthikeyan apart from meeting up with local Government Departments also participated in the Green Tamil Nadu Day at Tiruvannamalai. To complete the quantification of grooves that have not been quantified for more than a year in Tiruvallur district (Tiruttani, Pallipattu), our other Field and Desk Auditor Mr. Parthiban, with the help of our Cluster Servants Mrs. Vanaja and Mr. Venugopal (responsible for Pallipattu and Tiruttani Clusters), Mr. Srinivasan, Mr. Manjunath and Mr. Naveen have completed the quantification
