Trees, banana as intercrop and in the middle a farm pond where the farmer could save water for the grove and fish rearing, this perfect example of agroforest by Moganasundharam Small Group of Coimbatore Center.
Moganasundharam Small Group
Moganasundharam Small Group members are practicing agroforest at Mettuvavi village, Kinathukadavu Center, Coimbatore. They have planted multiple tree species like Kumil, Mahogany, Malai Vembu, Red Sandalwood and Teak, totalling to 4,706 trees. They are using the resources very prudently, water to the grove is provide through drip irrigation and sprinkler. They practice other short rotation crops like groundnet, chilly when the trees were low in height. A visit to their tree grove will teach us how the natural resources could be used prudently to grow multiple crops, trees, and food crops alongside.
TIST Program encourages everyone in the village
TIST organizes tree planting events for city dwelling individuals and corporate volunteers to bridge the gap between rural and urban. During tree planting events, TIST encourages and enlightens the city dwellers to walk together with the farming community for better future. Basic needs of the city come from villages, like food comes from surrounding villages and streams coming from villages provide water to city. Village champions are given opportunity to demonstrate their talents through TIST Program, so that, they learn to showcase their talents for better opportunity and income. During tree planting events, TIST provides opportunity to village folk artists to perform a show to the participants in the event, this encourages the artists to continue their art in a better way to the community. TIST provides opportunity to the pot makers to demonstrate their talents to the participants in the event and enlightens the participants on the importance of using earthen vessels.
Teak Farm Small Group
We are residing in VLN Kandigai village. We have 15 acre land and in which about 15 acres we practiced some food crops but we could not sell the yield for good price. At that time, we learnt about TIST tree planting program. We received free tree seedlings from TIST Program. IN 13 acres of our land we planted 3,220 teak trees. We are participating in all training programs organised by TIST and growing the trees in good manner. In between the trees, as intercrops we are practicing some food crops like, groundnet, chilly, ladyfinger, pomegranate, and we are having cattle farm in the same land. We thank TIST Program for providing us free seedlings.
