Saving energy at home is good for the environment and for your wallet

Tops Green Small Group of Katchur

This group is following the best pn hom of TIST in Katchur Village at lacepalayam Center. The members
of this group have planted five different species of trees like, Guava, Mango, Nelli, Sapota and Teak, all totaling to 296 trees. All the mango trees have grown more than five feet in height. These mango trees are tied and supported with a thick wood piece, so that the trees grow upwards and do not spread on the ground. They are planning to plant few more teak seedlings during the coming rainy season to reach 1000 trees for their group. They have also dug farm pond in one corner of their grove to store rain water. The members of thegroup are very active in all the
activities of TIST. During the guantification/audit, the members cooperate with the quantifiers well and come with all their grove details & SGMR book during quantification to help the quantifier.

Several new groups are coming up from in and around Devanampattu Village. We have few old groups in this village, who have planted teak trees with good spacing. The upcoming new groups are requested to come together with the old groups and join in all TIST meetings to know all about | theTIST Program.

Free Seedlings

The Tamilnadu Forest Department is distributing free seedlings to the farmers. The District Forest Officers of
Thiruvannamalai and Vellore have promised to give fee seedlings to TIST members too. Those members/groups that are interest to receive the free seedlings are requested to fill in the application form, which is available with TIST quantifiers. Attached a copy of your landownership document along with the application form and hand it over to the quantifier. The Forest Department has got several thousand long standing species like, Teak,
Kumil, Redsanders and Silkcotton to distribute it freely to the TIST members.Depending upon the type of soil in your land choose whichever species your group need and reap the benefits from TIST.

Good Tree: Indian Rosewood

Indian Rosewwod is an erect deciduous tree. It grows to the height of 25 meter and 2-3 meter in diameter. [t has leathery leaves which are up to 15 cm long. The flowers are whitish pink in colour. Its crown is oval in shape. The fruit is brown and pod like in shape. The fruit is dry and hard. The sapwood is white to pale brown in colour and the heartwood is golden to dark brown in colour.

Indian Rosewood is mostly propagated through the root suckers and seeds. It requires fertile well drained soil. Seeds are soaked in water for 48 hours before sowing. Seeds are germinated in three weeks. Young Rosewood needs full sunlight. It requires dry to wet soil. Young plants are well watered until established. Flowers occur
from October to February

Indian Rosewood holds many medicinal properties. Rosewood oil stimulates new cellgrowth, regenerate tissues, and helps minimize lines and wrinkles. It helps balance both dry and oily skin. It can prove useful against acne.

Its wood is used for the making furniture, doors, windows, ship floors, plywood, skis, musical instruments, carvings etc. Because of durability Rosewood is often used in the martial art weaponary, particulary as the shaft of spears and in the gun staves. Its oil is used in Perfumes.
