This year, she requested the Program Director, Joseph Rexon to have a show in some new center to distribute free seedlings to our Small Groups. Seedlings distribution event was organized at Placepalayam Center on 29th September. Rama came with her team of 32 members (all women) to Placepalayam.

The program started with a Prayer.

Jack Fruit Tree

The Jack tree is a very common one in our streets and gardens. It has been known in parts of India from the beginning of historical times. The Greek historian Theophrastus writing about 300 BC says that “there is also another tree which is very large and has wonderfully sweet and large fruit; it is used for food by the sages of India” We known that it is one of the Tri-fruit in Tamil Literature.

In English, it is the Jack or Jack Fruit Tree; in our scientific literature it goes, Artocarpus heterophyus tank. It belongs to the family Moracca. It is also known as Bread Fruit tree.

A middle sized to a large ever green tree; some of the leaves may fall during the winter season, but at noterne is the tree completely leaf less. leaves 10-20 c long, elliptic in shape, acuto at the apex, narrowed at the lease, leathery and siff in structure, smooth and shining above and deep green, rough and pale beneath. There is a start middle nerve going from the base to the apex of the leaf, with seven to tenpairs of arching lateral nerves.

Flower appears at the end of branches or on the trunk and branches away from the leaves; the two sexes are usually separate in different influences. Male heads 2-10 cm long, hairy with minute hari; anthers are minute and yellowish, the stalk of the male heads is stout, expanded into a ring just below the head; this ring may be fruit the remains of bract or health that enclosed the head when young. Female head flower very numerous, the styles free for about 2m, the real fruits of this tree are not the Jack fruit, but the small pieces into which the Jack Fruit is split, roughly the edible portion of the fruit, the outerpart or perianth is fleshy and edible with a sickly sweet odour, very much like that of ripe leananasl the seeds are over 2.5 cm long 1.6ck thick; the whole of the Jack Fruit grows to 30-90cm long, 20- 40 ck thick; Flowers appear in Jan-April every year.

The tree is now very widely cultivated in many parts of India. It has been suggested that it is indigenous to the western ghats of India in rain forests at attitudes of 600-100m. It is also mentioned as wild in the every green forest of Assam and Burma.

The best results are obtained in a most tropical climate and a deep rich soil & red soil. But the tree can grow on almost any soil. Cultivation is effected through seeds. It is better to plant these on the spot where the tree is to grow, as the long and delicate tap root of the seeding is easily damaged.

Seeds may be grown in polythene covers in baskets, provided care is taken not to damage the roots. The seedling thrives best in full open light, when the soil is kept moist.
